Today's expert is the director of nursing for Brightstar Home Care, Jennifer Livermore.
The question for her is, "What is the difference between home care and home health care?"
Home health care is skilled therapy and nursing, so when someone goes into the hospital and they've had surgery the doctor's going to write an order, give them a prescription for skilled nursing in the home, they might need wound care after surgery or they may just need therapy for strengthening purposes after surgery. It's a short term thing usually sixty days at a time is what they're certified for.
Home care is different. The services we provide are anything from personal care which is help with bathing, dressing, grooming, we can help with medication reminders, meal preparation. After surgery there are things you can't do around the home such as, lifting, bending, doing laundry, cleaning the floors, things like that. We can help with housekeeping. We can come in and provide companionship. Help with transportation for doctor's appointments, shopping, and errands things like that. We do everything from one hour a day to twenty-four seven care. We can go short term for someone who has had surgery and just needs us for a short time all the way to long term care if that's what's needed for people who have Alzheimer’s or Dementia and need that long term care.
