Bus Route Blues for Bentonville

BENTONVILLE, AR-- Students are back to the books in Bentonville. The district opened its doors on Thursday after winter's latest mess marked snow day number 11, but the morning commute caused some chaos. "We were surprised at how good the roads were and felt like if we went with a limited bus service which we've done in the past, that we could get kids in," Poore said.

With freezing temperatures, school buses didn't start and alerts to parents didn't send. Bentonville School District superintendent, Michael Poore, said "we ran into some problems where we just couldn't get buses started. We were there early to try to get them going we just had some challenges that way and that put us behind. It's a message parents receive that says we're running behind and yes we are still coming. We had some challenges there of just trying to make sure parents were aware of it," Poore said.

Twitter messages, Facebook comments, e-mails, and phone calls from alarmed students and parents started pouring in, along with pictures of icy parking lots.

"Well we did clear them. I think they were clear, but we still had some ice that was on some of those spots that were dangerous or maybe not as good as what we would have liked," Poore said.

The school is weighing in on how the morning played out.

"Obviously there were some challenges for parents, for the District, and you're going to have that when you have this kind of weather. We're trying to do everything we can. We know that it's not an ideal world but we thought today was worth it to come in," Poore said.

Poore said the situation is far from flawless, but everyone arrived safely. and he believes they're glad to be back.
