Services Set for Local High School Swimmer After Drowning

SILOAM SPRINGS, AR-- The community will say a final goodbye to a local high school swimmer who drowned in the Illinois river earlier this week.

Funeral services for 16-year-old Evan Thomas are set for 3:00 p.m. on Sunday at the First Baptist Church of Siloam Springs.

The church tells us there will be no visitation.

The teen was at the Siloam Springs Whitewater Recreation Park with friends on Tuesday when he disappeared under the water.

A Benton county dive team later recovered his body after several hours of searching.

Thomas was a student at Siloam Springs High School and was a member of the swim team.

The Benton County Sheriff's Office is still investigating exactly what led up to Thomas' death.

The $1.7 million kayak park was donated by the Walton Family Foundation.

We've continued to reach out to the foundation for comment but have yet to receive a response.

We've also continued to reach out to the city, which has expressed condolences to the Thomas family.

It's also canceling the park's grand opening which was scheduled for later this month.
