Summer Months Leave Blood Banks Searching for More Donations

NORTHWEST ARKANSAS-- Community Blood Center of the Ozarks held their largest blood drive of the summer on Thursday.

Blood donors are needed to save lives and right now blood banks are running short.

Chris Pilgrim, marketing manager at Community Blood Center of the Ozarks said, "There's no summer vacation for blood donation and summer time is shortage time when it comes to blood."

When college kids head out of town for summer, blood donations run low. Community Blood Center of the Ozarks, marketing manager chris pilgrim says that can be dangerous.

Pilgrim said, "We wouldn't be prepared in case of an incident like the joplin tornado back in 2011 where we needed that o negative on the shelf at the time and a lot of it. Right now we are in real need of all negative blood types, O-negative and A-negative in particular. "

With some incentive, Pilgrim hopes more folks decide to give.

Pilgrim said, "Donors today receive two tickets to a Naturals ball game. They receive a "Bleed Blue Thursday" t-shirt.

Serving 38 hospitals and 11 in Northwest Arkansas, blood donated at centers in Northwest Arkansas is packaged and sent to save lives locally.

Pilgrim said, "Your platelets may go to a cancer patient, somebody that is undergoing chemotherapy, or your plasma may go to a burn victim."

Pilgrim says some folks are nervous to walk in, but the feeling you get walking out makes it worth it.

Pilgrim said, "It's a great feeling you get when you walk out of here, knowing that you helped save somebody's life in less than an hour, it didn't cost you a cent, and it has a real impact on the community."
