The Pulse: FDA Proposing New E-Cig Rules

The FDA proposing new rules on e-cigarettes; a New York Yankees pitcher suspended; and more in Thursday's edition of "The Pulse."

The Food and Drug Administration is moving toward regulating electronic cigarettes and other tobacco products. The agency is proposing rules that call for strict regulation of electronic cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, nicotine gels, water pipe tobacco and hookahs. The recommendations will be finalized after a 75-day public comment period.

Three Americans are dead after a shooting in Kabul, Afghanistan Thursday. An Afghan security guard opened fire on foreign medical workers as they walked into a hospital. Local officials say the gunman is a member of the Afghan public protection force and was assigned to the medical facility. This the latest in a string of attacks in Afghanistan as international troops prepare to withdraw most service members by the end of the year.

History is about to be made in Vatican City. Coming up on Sunday, a ceremony will pronounce not one but two former popes as saints. Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII will be canonized by the current Holy Father. Sunday's ceremony is expected to draw 3 million people, including dozens of world leaders.

Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda has been suspended for 10 games for using pine tar. Pineda was ejected from Wednesday's game against the Boston Red Sox after the illegal substance was discovered on the right side of his neck during the second inning. According to, Pineda later apologized and admitted to applying the pine tar to help control his pitches. The Yankees went on to lose the game.

"Time" magazine has released its 2014 list of the 100 most influential people in the world. This year's list includes a record 41 women, including singer Beyoncé, who is featured on the cover. Actor/director Robert Redford, openly gay NBA player Jason Collins and General Motors CEO Mary Barra are featured on three additional covers inside the magazine, which goes on sale Friday.
