The 2014 MTV video music awards nominations are out, and this year's show is set to be all about Beyonce. The singer leads the pack with eight nominations, including video of the year, best female video, best choreography and best video with a social message. Not far behind are Australian newcomer Iggy Azalea and rap giant Eminem. They have seven nominations each. The MTV video music awards will air live on August 24th, from the forum in Inglewood, California.
Number 4: Google Could Be Cyber Security Superheroes
In a new effort called Google Project Zero, a team of security researchers have made it their mission to track down security flaws in the world's software. If Google researchers discover flaws in another company's software, they'll alert that firm, and then go public with it on their blog. The team already spotted holes in Apple's Ios device software and Microsoft's malware protection program.
Number 3: Elaine Stritch Dies
Legendary stage and screen actress Elaine Stritch has died at the age of 89. The Tony and Emmy winner passed away at her Birmingham, Michigan home thursday surrounded by family. Stritch is best known for her autobiographical one-woman show call "Elaine Stritch At Liberty." She also won awards for guest starring TV roles on "Law & Order" and for playing Alec Baldwin's mother on "30 rock." Broadway will dim its lights in her honor on Friday night.
Number 2: New Immigrant Facility Opens In Texas
A new immigrant processing facility opens today in Texas, as the border crisis continues. The facility in Mcallen will be used for unaccompanied minors. Border patrol will be able to handle up to 1,000 unaccompanied minors inside the 55,000 square-foot facility. Children will sleep on foam rubber pads on the floor. The children will be at the site for about 72 hours before being shipped to temporary shelters.
Number 1: Malaysian Flight Crash
Ukrainian officials say all 295 people on board a Malaysian airlines jet are dead after the plane was shot down over eastern Ukraine. The flight was headed from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur when it crashed with 280 passengers and 15 crew on board. President Obama called the crash a terrible tragedy and spoke about it on the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Ukrainian government in Kiev and the pro-russian rebels in Eastern Ukraine have accused each other of shooting the aircraft down.
