Veterans Home Hosts 'Welcome Home' Event

FAYETTEVILLE, AR -- The Arkansas Dept. of Veterans Affairs hosted a "Welcome Home" event at the local V.A. home Wednesday.

It marks a partnership between the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences Northwest Campus and the Arkansas Veterans Home in Fayetteville.

Gov. Mike Beebe (D-AR) praised the partnership for seeking better care for veterans and more training for students in residency.

"We owe it to the men and women who wore the uniform of our armed services to treat them in the best possible way we can to provide them the services that they deserve," Beebe said. "And to show them the love, honor and respect that is due them."

The home's administrator, Kriss Schaffer, said eventually veterans will have access to therapy through UAMS.

"It's always wonderful when one state agency works with another state agency," Schaffer said. "It will actually provide better service for us at less money. So it's a win-win situation."

Schaffer said that's good for many reasons, including allowing veterans to be around younger people like the medical residents.
