KNWA & Your Family: Death Rate Spike

(CNN) -- You've probably heard of a few well-known risk factors for death, high cholesterol and smoking, but what about Christmas? Several studies show you have a greater chance of dying on Christmas, the day after Christmas or New Year's Day than any other single day of the year. According to the centers for disease control, that's true for people who die of natural causes, and researchers say it's also true for those who die of the five most common diseases, including cancer. Scientists still can't explain the phenomenon, but one popular theory is that people delay getting the care they need to spend time with their families.
