NORTHWEST ARKANSAS-- High winds are keeping burn bans and red flag warnings in effect around Northwest Arkansas. As of Tuesday night, Washington, Madison and Franklin counties were under a burn ban. Red flag warnings are also in effect for Benton, Washington, Carroll and Madison counties. The difference between the ban and the warning? Citations are issued under a ban, not a red flag warning. Either way, firefighters say any outside burning is dangerous because of the high winds. "It's extremely dangerous," says Assistant Washington County Fire Marshal Tyler McCartney. " I just got off a call from West Fork where a guy was burning, it got out and caught a shed on fire, just because of the wind. So basically, if you're burning, the high wind can catch that fire, throw embers anywhere, out into grass, into a field, into wherever that might be." Washington county tells us the burn ban will stay in effect until conditions improve.
