Arkansas Truckers Compete to be Champ

ROGERS -- Truckers make a pit stop in Rogers this weekend for the annual Arkansas Trucking Association Championships. The best of the best in the big rig industry all flocked to the John Q. Hammons center to showcase their skills. Over 150 people showed up to compete. Arkansas Trucking Association President Shannon Newton says the event has a long tradition. "This is a really big deal within the industry, the trucking championship's 100 year tradition, so many of the drivers here are striving to achieve that goal and get to go to Nationals." Newton said.

The winners of this competition are headed to Nationals, but for Henry Ipema, it's really more of a learning experience.

"Hopefully I'll come away with more knowledge and more understanding of whats out there with trucks and the new systems." Ipema said. This is his third year to compete. He says there are similar faces each year and the competition picks up.

"It's cool to meet the same guys and see them again, each year they kind of step up the level of competition," Ipema explained. Newton says its a great way to find the safest drivers in Arkansas. "This event is intended to celebrate and recognize those individuals who are committed to safety everyday out on the roads and that are professionals at what they do."

At the end of the day, not everyone will go to Nationals, but when safe driving is the priority, Arkansas wins every time. The technician championship takes place Friday, with the driving portion firing up Saturday morning.

Winners this weekend will head on to the National Championships in Pittsburgh.
