City Votes to Apply For Funds to Buy Mt. Kessler

FAYETTEVILLE, AR -- The city of Fayetteville is one step closer to owning land on Mt. Kessler.

The city council voted unanimously 8-0 to apply for matching funds that would equal what Walton Family Foundation already pledged toward the $3-million-dollar piece of land.

The Walton Family Foundation announced earlier this year it would pay $1.5 million of it.

"The purchase of this land would keep it in mostly a forested state," John Pennington, executive director of the Beaver Watershed Alliance.

"...Which would be good for the existing recreation that takes place but would also be good for our local drinking water supply."

Tuesday's city council meeting was standing-room only as many folks showed up to support the issue.

"There's a lot of people here who support it," Charles Brickey, a Fayetteville resident, says.

"This is your opportunity to lead Fayetteville into the future for not just our children, but for our grandchildren and our great-grandchildren."
