Consumer Minute: Car Insurance Costs, Renter's Insurance & Big Electronic Sales

Your age, your gender and even your marital status affect how much you pay for protection. According to a new report, younger drivers tend to pay more than older drivers, premiums generally go down with age, but when you turn 60, rates start to go up a little each year. Women usually pay less than men, in fact a 20-year-old woman pays on average 23% less than a 20-year-old man for the same policy.

Another survey finds many young adults are leaving their belongings unprotected. A Harris poll done for Nationwide Insurance found that 56% of twenty-somethings who rent do not have renters insurance. 68% of those surveyed said it would cost them more than $5,000 to replace their belongings. Nationwide estimates the average cost of renters insurance to be about $20 a month.

You may notice electronics sales popping up in stores and online. They are "end of the year" sales. March 31st was the end of the Japanese fiscal year. That's when prices on many electronics plummet. The reason is, many of last year's models are being phased out to make way for newer models with more modern features. So, now may be the time to get a good deal.
