Crooks Posing as Health Inspectors, Targeting Businesses

The Health Department says crooks are posing as health inspectors and targeting business owners.

We're told the point of the scam is to extort money from restaurant and market owners by convincing them they owe.

As soon as the man walked through the door Larry Gordon, a butcher at Floyd's Seafood and Meat in Sherwood, knew something wasn't right .

"Supposed to have badge,"Gordan said.

The man said he was with the Health Department and he was there to do an inspection

"He had a magnetic placard on the side of his car that had ADH on the side," he said.

Gordon said the man was adamant but he wouldn't budge

"I can do whatever I need to do to get in your store I said well you're not coming in the store until you show me your credentials," Gordon said.

"It's a reoccurring scam," Sherri Woodus with the Arkansas Department of Health said.

The Arkansas Department of Health is warning business owners people pretending to be health inspectors are making them a target.

"Trying to either get into the establishments or get the establishments to pay for or purchase materials or items that they are scamming them to get," she said.

A handful of complaints have come in over the last week, lucky for Gordon he's been around long enough to catch the scam, but the Health Department says there's no telling how many have fallen victim.

"We have a lot of businesses out here that don't know any better than to 'I'll pay you for this permit," Gordon said.
