((NBC NEWS))--Email accounts, compromised nationwide. This time, the targets are Yahoo users. The company says it's the result of a "coordinated effort" by hackers. Yahoo officials said the hackers tried to break into email accounts using computer software. This is the same type of software used in the recent security breach at Target that affected millions of shoppers. Yahoo says it immediately reset passwords of affected accounts once it discovered the problem. The California-based tech giant said it believes the attackers were trying to access the accounts using credentials that had been obtained from a breach of another company's database. No word yet on that company's name.
Here's what Yahoo recommends to keep your account secure:
- Change your password regularly.
- Never use the same password on multiple sites, a practice Yahoo says makes people particularly vulnerable.
- Use different variations of letters, numbers and symbols.
- Beware of "phishing" emails that ask you to update passwords or enter other personal information.
