Fayetteville Man Accused of Killing Ex-Girlfriend's Puppy

FAYETTEVILLE, AR -- A Fayetteville man has been accused of killing his girlfriend's dogs.

John Christopher Short faces a charge of aggravated cruelty to animals, a Class D Felony.

According to an affidavit released by the Washington County Sheriff's Office, the woman contacted police saying a former boyfriend may have intentionally injured and or killed two of her dogs.

One died around March 20, 2014. Another puppy, named Hector, died just a few weeks later.

The woman said when she came home one day Short told her the puppy was on a pillow and stated, "It is not breathing. I think it is dead." The affidavit goes on to say that Short told the woman the puppy had jumped off the deck in the back yard.

An examination done by a doctor with the Arkansas Livestock and Poultry Commission, assisted by the Arkansas State Crime Lab, determined the second pet died from blunt force trauma to the skull not consistent with a fall.

Short is in the Washington County Jail.
