First Gay Couple Wed in Washington County

WASHINGTON COUNTY -- Same-sex couples waited for hours at the Washington County Clerk's Office Monday morning to get their marriage licenses. But for the first couple in line, a few hours was a small price to pay to be legally wed.

Amy Grigg and Diana Rister waited outside the Washington County Clerk's Office since 2:30 Monday morning, to make sure they were at the front of the line to receive a marriage license.

The two have been in a relationship for 14 years and are raising 2 grandchildren together, yet never thought their partnership would be legal. They said they're excited to be a part of Arkansas history.

"To be a part of this, whether we were the 1st couple or the 50th couple, it's truly a miracle," Amy Grigg, 46 said.

"We're a family whether they want to believe that or not but we are a family," Diana Rister, 51, said.

The couple said with an appeal in the works, they hope everyone who wants a marriage license gets one and quickly.

One man even passed out 10 dollar bills to help with the 60 dollar marriage license fee. He said it's a symbol of support for an issue he and his wife have been fighting for for years.

For the dozens receiving their licenses Monday, they said it's a dream they never thought would be realized in their lifetime.
