KNWA & Your Family: Autism & Pregnancy

In this week's KNWA & Your Family, new research shows a troubling correlation between a woman's thyroid function and her child's risk for autism. A study published in the August issue of the Annals of Neurology could show a possible breakthrough in narrowing down the causes of autism. A study of thousands of pregnant women in the Netherlands found that a lack of iodine in their diets affected fetal brain development. In fact, mothers with very low levels of thyroid hormone early in pregnancy multiplied the chance of having a child with autism by 4 times. Doctors recommend pregnant women get a thyroid check and take pre-natal vitamins.
