Having kids is expensive. The latest study from the USDA says families who had a child in 2012 will spend nearly a quarter of a million dollars over 17 years. The average cost is $241,000, up about $6,000 from 2012, without counting college. So why the big increase? In the past year, the cost of child care, health care, and clothing expenses shot up the most. When you break down $241,000 30% of the money goes to housing. That's followed by child care, education and food costs.
