Local Non-Profit Donates $50,000 to Pediatric Cancer Research

LITTLE ROCK-- A local non-profit donated $50,000 to the Arkansas Children's Hospital to support cancer research. The Ryan Gibson Foundation, which raises funds for leukemia research and other blood-related cancers, donated the funds to support a clinical trial at Arkansas Children's Hospital (ACH). ACH will match the gift, for a total of $100,000.

The clinical trial is led by Dr. David Becton, the chief of pediactric hermatology/oncology at ACH. Dr. Becton has been involved in over 50 other clinical trials for pediatric cancer, 10 of which focused on leukemia. This study will last up to four years, and includes eight to 10 patients.

"Arkansas Children's Hospital sees 90 percent of our state's children battling cancer," said Dr. Becton. "Research and clinical trials will help us continue our fight toward finding a cure for this disease. This gift from the Ryan Gibson Foundation will have a huge impact not only for the patients in the clinical trial, but also for patients across the world fighting leukemia."

The Ryan Gibson Foundation was founded in memory of Ryan Gibson, a Springdale native who died in 2001 from complications with his successful battle with leukemia. Gibson graduated from Springdale High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas. He worked on a cancer research project with the Baylor Health System while waiting to begin medical school in 2001. He had been accepted to the University of Arkansas School of Medicine, along with other medical schools at University of Texas Southwestern and Duke University. He was active in the leukemia society in Arkansas and Texas, through bone marrow drives, fundraising, and counseling. The Ryan Gibson Foundation has chapters in Arkansas, Texas, and Missouri.
