Local Students Voice Support for DACA

ROGERS, Ark. - One week after the Trump administration's announcement, local students took to the streets to demonstrate their support for the DACA program.

Nearly 200 chanting students, alumni and Dreamers marched from Rogers Heritage High School to the Frisco Stage today as part of a protest against the Trump administration's decision to end the DACA program.

"My parents brought me here for a better life, better education, opportunities I wouldn't be offered in Mexico and I fear that the Trump administration would get rid of this program because it's helped 800,000 Dreamers all over this nation," said Cassandra Hernandez, a DACA recipient.

The march and rally were organized by Rogers Heritage students.

"It says a lot about our kids and we have some tremendous kids and so as an educator, it's our nature to facilitate and foster that...but it does speak volumes as to their concerns for each other," says Brig Caldwell, a faculty member at Rogers Heritage.

The demonstration also had the support of the school's administration.

"I'm so proud to be a part of this school because they show that they aren't afraid and they're fighting for what they believe in," Hernandez said.

At the end of the march, DACA recipients took to the stage to tell their stories and express their fears about the future.

"All of these DACA-mented students, they are brilliant kids and I just want them to know they are not alone," Hernandez said.

Organizers encouraged teh crowd to reach out to their local congressmen and voice their support for the Dream Act.

"We want to leverage the energy and the group of people that are invited to participate with us to also take effective political steps going forward," Caldwell explained.
