University of Arkansas Trademarks Hog Call

KNWA - Who knew a "woo" could be trademarked?

The University of Arkansas, apparently. The university has received a registered trademark from the United States Patent and Trademark Office for the Hog Call. The granted registration of the sensory mark protects specifically the sounds, rather than a design or word.

University officials say it's the first time a college or university in the nation will receive a federal trademark registration for its college cheer as a sound mark from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

The federal trademark registration is for a sound mark which consists of a crowd cheering the following words: “Woooooooo Pig Sooie! Woooooooo Pig Sooie! Woooooooo Pig Sooie! Razorbacks!” Sound marks have been issued for other registrations for other entities on different sounds.

The registration protects the University from "anyone seeking to exploit the mark commercially – such as a TV commercial, radio or internet – without a license or agreement," according to a press release. Similar procedures are already in place for logos and word marks of the University of Arkansas.

The cheer dates back to the late 1920s.

And the University wants to make one thing very clear: Keep calling those hogs. The trademarks "in no way prohibit all Razorbacks from Calling the Hogs as much as they can. Instead, they mark a proactive step to ensure the Hog Call cheer made famous by Razorback fans remains properly affiliated with the University of Arkansas and our great state. We encourage Razorback fans everywhere to Call the Hogs early and often!”

The USPTO granted the federal trademark registration on July 1, 2014.
