Legislation Would Outlaw Getting Abortion due to Down Syndrome

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA) -- One Arkansas senator is working on legislation that would make it illegal for parents to abort an infant due to a down syndrome diagnosis.

Sen. Trent Garner, R-El Dorado, announced the draft bill on Friday to coincide with the March for Life in Washington, D.C.

The law would be called the Down Syndrome by Abortion Prohibition Act, and the soonest it could be voted on would be in the 2019 legislative session.

Garner said he would also like to add more genetic and medical conditions to the bill before its final version is filed.

Rep. Aaron Pilkington, R-Clarksville, has said he'd support such legislation in the Arkansas House.
