Preventing Theft During the Holidays

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Local law enforcement is teaming up with Ozarks Electric to help make Northwest Arkansas more secure. Experts in a variety of fields came together to share information about how you can protect yourself and your belongings during this high crime period.

Officials say they often see a rise in theft during the holidays. Law enforcement now wants to spread awareness about how people can prevent becoming a victim.

Lt. Ti Augustine with the Washington County Sheriff's Office says when mailing cards or money, put them in a postal box rather than in a personal mailbox and track any packages being delivered to your house.

Augustine also says you may want to reconsider putting gifts under the Christmas tree, where thieves can see them from a window.

"People are just looking for that easy opportunity to get big ticket items a lot of times that they can re-sell or use for themselves so just be mindful of all the thefts that go on, keep your doors and windows locked, close those blinds and curtains when you're not home," Augustine said.

Another big problem this time of year is cyber crime.

Alyssa Birchard, a cybersecurity expert with Ozarks Electric, says there are a number of ways people can avoid theft online.

Birchard says people should only give personal information to secure sites and when buying online, use a credit card rather than a debit card so the charges can be disputed without money being lost.

People also need to be smarter when it comes to making hard-to-guess passwords.

"If I know a little about human behavior, or what football team you like or what your kids' name is or your dog's name, I can guess what your password might be," Birchard explained.
