A girl between the ages of eight and 10 was found living in a forest with a pack of monkeys, the BBC reports.
Authorities were alerted to the situation by villagers in the Katarniaghat wildlife sanctuary on the border of India and Nepal. One police official, Suresh Yadav, said the monkeys began attacking his squad when they tried to approach her.
Police are trying to locate the girl's parents while she recovers from malnourishment and wounds she suffered on her body. She was initially screeching to communicate and walking on all fours.
She is expected to be handed over to child welfare officials when her condition improves. Some are comparing her to "Mowgli," the character in Rudyard Kipling's "The Jungle Book," who was raised by wolves.
