Arkansas In Striking Distance At NCAA Regional

BATON ROUGE, La. – The 31st-ranked and sixth-seeded Arkansas men’s golf team opened play on Monday at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional with an 11-over 299, good for T-8th place at the University Club.

The Razorbacks (+11) are just seven shots off the cut line as the top five teams advance to the NCAA championship later this month at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois. Host LSU leads the field at 12-under, while Virginia (-6), Oregon (-1), Duke (+3), and Kentucky (+4) round out the top five.

Teeing off on No. 10, Arkansas found a steady rhythm early and was 1-under as a team through the first five holes, before making the turn to the front side at 2-over. A trio of double bogeys on the first two holes of the second nine led Arkansas to 9-over on the side and left them T-8th overall when all 14 teams finished the opening round.

Freshman Mason Overstreet led the way with a 1-over 73, opening his round with seven consecutive pars, before coming in with two bogeys and one birdie.

Playing in his second postseason, sophomore Charles Kim tallied 10 straight pars to open his day. He added a double bogey, two bogeys and a pair of birdies to finish with a 2-over 74.

Junior Alvaro Ortiz and freshman Luis Garza signed for identical rounds of 4-over 76, combining for six of the team’s eight birdies. Rookie William Buhl rounded out the team with an 8-over 80.

Arkansas will go off No. 10 tee Tuesday morning at 8 a.m., playing with Jacksonville State and Northwestern.
