Battle for Backup Quarterback Still Undecided

Coaches want the best out of their players and one way to do that is with competition. Behind Austin Allen, there's plenty of that with sophomore Ty Storey and redshirt freshman Cole Kelley

"Competition brings out the best in everybody and I definitely feel like that's how it is right now," said Storey. "I feel like he's pushing me and I'm pushing him. Really everybody in the room is really just benefiting from it and I think everybody is just trying to take their game to the next level."

Kelley says he had a meeting in the spring with offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Dan Enos who gave him some advice that the freshman thinks has worked.

"He told me I just need to focus on me and not focus on the battle and that's what I've started to do," said Kelley. "So yea, I think I've started to read the defense better and starting to get the check downs a lot better."

The battle between the two is nowhere near over. While they've mostly split reps, they're each getting days to take all the reps with the twos. Even though Enos sees little to no separation, he likes what he's seeing.

"They've both been good," said Enos. "I think Coach B and I would feel a lot different if they were both bad. You know, that hasn't been the case. It's been a case of they've had some really good plays and some really good days and neither one of them has just had a bad day."

While he's not in the meeting rooms with them, defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads sees a lot to like in the battle for number 2 quarterback.

"My simple statement would say that they're play is elevated from the spring," said Rhoads. "I think competition is the mother of all learning and they've got it right now at that position. And I see them performing on a daily basis."
