Many Hog fans zeroed into Bielema's comments without taking note of his follow up assertion that Arkansas coaches would continue to work with Allen to improve him as a dropback passer. For his part Allen wasn't content to wait until August camp to demonstrate that Bielema was serious about that comment. In late May Allen traveled to Florida for several days of individual instruction under former Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke at the prestigious IMG quarterback camp.
"He's known for transforming QB's," Allen observed of his sessions with Weinke. "Things that I've tried to take back. I had a great time out there and I learned a lot from him."
Pressed for more details Allen said, "I had a lot of problems with my balance in the pocket. Making a lot of off balanced throws and things that were hurting my accuracy. So we did a lot of balance work. A lot of bag work. A lot of foot drills."
Not only did Allen make the Florida trip on his own dime but he's been sharing what he learned with the other quarterbacks during voluntary summer workouts which began on campus in early June. With instruction from their own coaches extremely limited during the summer months, some of the drills Allen has set up have been extremely helpful to his offensive teammates.
"We've been doing a lot of drills where we try to stay on balance, all that," redshirt freshman quarterback Austin Allen revealed. "Just on all our throws and just, getting our back hip through it, making more throws in the pocket and all that."
"He's definitely improving a lot and he's continuing to get better," sophomore tight end Hunter Henry said of Brandon Allen. "We're throwing every day. Trying to build that connection throughout the summer so it can carry on into the fall."
As for the possibility of an expanded play action and rollout package this fall, Allen says there is some truth to that but many fans have been reading too much into Bielema's comments on the subject.
"I do have the ability to make throws on the run," Allen said with a smile. "However that's just a part of our offense that we're getting a little bit more into. I wouldn't say a lot. Just having that other element is going to help us."
