FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Less than 24 hours removed from qualifying for his first pro event, Arkansas men’s golf senior Sebastian Cappelen added another honor to his long list of accolades on Tuesday when he was named to the Golfweek All-American second team.
The second player in program history to earn All-SEC honors four straight years, Cappelen is the first Razorback to be named an All-American in each of his four years. Cappelen is a three-time PING All-American with the 2014 second and third teams still yet to be announced and has appeared on one of the Golfweek All-American teams each of the last two years.
On Monday, Cappelen qualified for this week’s Web.com Tour Air Capital Classic in Wichita, Kan. held at Crestview CC. It will mark Cappelen’s pro debut, taking place just miles away from Prairie Dunes Country Club where he finished tied for ninth at the NCAA Championships held less than a month ago.
Cappelen earned his second straight All-SEC first team honor this year, leading the Razorbacks in nearly every statistical category including counting scores (38), scoring average (71.3), top 5s (3), top 10s (6), top 20s (11), under-par rounds (19), birdies (135) and pars (442). In the fall at the Crooked Stick Intercollegiate, Cappelen made it four straight years with a tournament title, winning the event thanks to three straight under-par rounds. The trio of under-par performances help make up his team-leading 19 for the year and stagger total of 75 at par or lower for his career.
Cappelen finished the year ranked No. 9 by Golfstat and No. 16 by Golfweek following the 20th top 10 finish of his career at the NCAA Championships. Arkansas’ low man all three rounds at the NCAA Championships, Cappelen’s final round as a Razorback was a two-under 68
The program’s all-time leader in scoring average (72.0), Cappelen’s illustrious career also features a 2013 SEC individual championship, four PING All-Central Region awards and three appearances at the Palmer Cup for Team Europe. Over his 49 career tournaments in the Arkansas starting lineup, Cappelen turned in a counting score in 134 of 144 rounds to go along with 37 top 20s, 20 top 10s and 441 birdies.
