In scrimmage number two on Saturday, later is now.
"Now we're at the point where we've got to spend a lot of time cleaning up some things that we've already installed," Smith said. "I think we've got a good baseline in and now as things more forward we've got to get better at playing situational football."
The defense unleashed a heavy dose of pressure on Arkansas' quarterbacks in the initial scrimmage with good success. But to new secondary coach Clay Jennings there were still too many big plays. Like a 50 yard bomb unleashed by Brandon Allen to tight end Hunter Henry through the middle of the secondary.
"We've got to become more consistent," Jennings stressed. "I thought defensively we started out hot and then we had a little bit of a lull right there in the middle but we did finish off strong.
Safety Alan Turner came up with Allen's only pick of the scrimmage. Turner says there needs to be more of that on Saturday.
"It was a good scrimmage but we could have done way better,"' Turner recalled. "We want to limit those big plays. The offense took advantage of that. That's how points get on the board. We need to keep the offense off the scoreboard."
New defensive line coach Rory Segrest wants to see more pressure coming from Arkansas' down linemen.
"I don't ever want to be in a situation where we feel like we have to blitz to get pressure," Segrest revealed. "We've got enough talent to be able to get the job done. We feel like we can get some pressure with a four man rush."
Segrest also wants to disrupt more than just the quarterbacks in scrimmage number two, telling the Razorback Nation, "We need to get tougher and more physical and lead with our hands. Especially in the run game. A lot of times we're missing with our aiming points. It causes us to get out of our gaps a little bit. So we need that consistency of being where we need to be and when we're supposed to be there."
Saturday's scrimmage starts at 11:45 a.m. at Reynolds Razorback Stadium.
