"I know this is the best class for Arkansas since I've been here," said Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema.
High praise from the head Hog about his 2017 signing class that nationally ranks anywhere from 24th - 28th. To Bielema, the class might not be filled with 5 star prospects, but it has something just as valuable.
"It address the needs we have right now and with some players that can help us immediately," said Bielema. "I think to get those offensive guys in the positions that we got them can help our offense move in the right direction. I think defensively, transitioning to a 3-4, need some more athletic type players at linebacker and DB, maybe some d-lineman with some more girth to them that can play those ends and inside positions is really really big."
The best haul for the Hogs appears to be the secondary where they pulled in 5 players who earned a unique distinction today from Coach Bielema.
"Might have been the as deep and most established group defensive back class as I've been around," said Bielema.
To Bielema, the icing on the cake was the addition of 4-star cornerback Chevin Calloway, who has developed a solid relationship with new defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads.
"Paul was over there in December," said Bielema. "He was going to play in an all-star game, we didn't go out and practice him or anything, but him and Paul had a 1 on 1 session kinda talking about some things he believes in in DB drills and skills and he gave Chevin a little take home assignment and thought it would be done a week or two later, when he came back, but Chevin called him back a day later with the answers."
The Hogs still have 1 scholarship remaining in the class of 2017, for which Bielema says they are still exploring different avenues.
