No. 14 Hogs Fall To No. 12 Auburn In Marathon Match

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – In a match that lasted 4 hours and 20 minutes, No. 12 Auburn edged out a three-set thriller at No. 1 singles to pull off a 4-3 victory against No. 14 Arkansas in the second round of the SEC Women’s Tennis Tournament on Thursday.

“What an incredible effort from both teams today,” head coach Michael Hegarty said. “We gave it all we had, and there’s no question we’re extremely well prepared for the NCAA Tournament.”


With the team score tied 3-3, Arkansas’ No. 43 ranked Shannon Hudson and Auburn’s No. 34 ranked Andie Dikosavljevic battled back and forth at the top spot. Hudson won a 10-8 tiebreaker to take the first set before Dikosavljevic responded with a 6-4 victory in the second. The two were tied 5-all in the final frame before Dikosavljevic took the next two games for the 6-7 (8-10), 6-4, 7-5 win, clinching the team victory for Auburn.


The Tigers (22-9, 5-8 SEC) won doubles, but the Razorbacks (17-9, 7-6 SEC) surged back in singles with wins in straight sets at the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 positions. In addition to the top spot, Auburn’s singles wins came from No. 2 and No. 6.


In doubles, No. 60 ranked Léolia Jeanjean and Giulia Pairone delivered a 6-3 win at No. 1, but Auburn battled back to eventually win 7-5 at No. 3 and then 7-6 (7-5) at No. 2, taking the extremely tight doubles point.


No. 114 ranked Jeanjean put Arkansas on the board with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Auburn’s No. 124 ranked Taylor Russo at No. 3 singles. Pairone gave the Razorbacks a 2-1 lead with her 6-1, 6-3 win over Auburn’s Georgie Axon at No. 4. The Tigers responded with a victory at No. 6 to level the score 2-2.


Arkansas reclaimed the lead when sophomore Mia Jurasic closed out a 7-6 (7-0), 6-4 win at No. 5, but Auburn’s No. 26 ranked Alizee Michaud came through in three sets at No. 2 for the Tigers 0-6, 6-2, 7-5. Dikosavljevic’s clinching win came one hour and 31 minutes later.
