In this week's Your Health, Doctor Adam Childs tells us about the importance of prostate screenings. According to Dr. Childs, prostate cancer is a very common condition that men face as they get older. About one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. It's still the number two cancer killer in men. Dr. Childs says Washington Regional offers an annual digital rectal exam that men can have with their physicians as well as consideration of a blood test known as a PSA. Dr. Childs says PSA screening is a very individualized decision that men need to discuss with their doctor about whether or not the benefits outweigh the risks. Doctor Childs says early detection of prostate cancer is the best prevention. Washington Regional also has a lot of treatments that can slow down the disease. When prostate cancer is caught early enough, it can be removed with either surgery or radiation or sometimes a few other treatments.
