Tavares Jones anchors KNWA Today weekday mornings from 5:00 to 7:00 A.M. and FOX 24 News at 7 A.M.
Prior to joining the KNWA team in Summer 2019, Tavares spent three years covering breaking news and severe weather in Central GA as a breaking news anchor/reporter at WGXA-TV. He also spent some time at WHIO-TV in Dayton, OH. Tavares started his career as an intern at the NBC News affiliate in Orlando, FL.
An alumnus of the University of Florida, Tavares holds dual degrees in Journalism and Political Science. Prior to graduation, he began a career as paralegal and public affairs director at a regional law firm based in Gainesville, FL, specializing in criminal defense, personal injury, and wrongful death cases.
Tavares’ background and experience have given him the unique opportunity to apply his legal knowledge to coverage of several major headlines across Northwest Arkansas, including the Benton County retrial of Mauricio Torres, the Bella Vista man previously convicted for the rape and murder of his 6-year-old son. Tavares also contributed to live coverage of the funeral procession for fallen Fayetteville police officer Stephen Carr who was killed by a gunman while in the line of duty in December of 2019.
Tavares has served as emcee for the American Heart Association of Northwest Arkansas’ Cycle Nation event, an effort to help the community take control of brain and heart health. He also recognizes area teachers each month of the school year who are making a difference beyond the classroom, through the KNWA/ Post Consumer Brands Golden Apple Award program.
Tavares’ professional affiliations include the National Association of Black Journalists, Society of Professional Journalists, and the Radio Television Digital News Association.
Tavares is committed to serving the local community and devotes much of his time to various organizations including the National Coalition for the Homeless, Children’s Miracle Network, Catholic Charities, United Way, and the Miss America Scholarship Organization.
