Doing Good: NWA Charity Challenge of Champions

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The Charity Challenge of Champions packs in tennis fans year after year and has raised more than $4-million dollars for local charities.

The organization shared why they are excited to work with the new charity they've partnered with.

The Charity Challenge of Champions has given back to the Northwest Arkansas community for 26 years by utilizing the sport of tennis. Besides raising money, the event gives fans the opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the greatest who have ever played the game.

"People taking part in it for the first time are always amazed at how close they can get to someone who may have won a grand slam title," Charity Challenge of Champions Executive Committee Member Richie Roberts shared.

"It was just like, 'oh my gosh, I feel like I'm at Wimbeldon,' you know," Charity Challenge of Champions Executive Committee Member Patti McGill remembered.

Roberts and McGill say they are thrilled by their new partnership with the Northwest Arkansas Women's Shelter.

"After touring the facility, and seeing the people that are involved in the executive board as well as the volunteers that they have it's amazing, yet overwhelming to see the need that is there," McGill explained.

Northwest Arkansas Women's Shelter Executive Director Merritt Weeks says the shelter has been running at, or near, full capacity for the last year.

"Most of our 17 rooms are in use by families who need to find safety and who even need hope restored to them as they make choices moving forward to live free of violence," Weeks said.

While the focus may be on the large number of tennis legends taking part in the event, organizers remind you that it is all about making a difference in the lives of those who need help.

"It's just nice to be able to help and get somebody back on their feet, where they can be on their own and move forward," McGill shared.

The event kicks off on September 13-th with the a 5K run. Click here for a full list of all the events that include the tennis portion as well as a golf tournament. You'll also find details about how to attend or take part.
