Pink Courage: Free Survivorship Series

A free survivorship series is creating a platform to talk about the tough issues of life after breast cancer.

“We have set this bold goal of reducing breast cancer mortality by 50-percent in 10 years. We know that a lot of that is access to care, but it’s also access to information and education as well,” said Lauren Marquette, Executive Director of Susan G. Komen Ozark.

Susan G. Komen Ozark is hosting free survivorship series workshops to address issues of local breast cancer patients. The most recent topic was body image and intimacy after a diagnosis.

“Sometimes with younger breast cancer survivors, treatment will often kick them in to early menopause. There’s a lot of issues and symptoms that women don’t talk after they’ve had breast cancer,” said Marquette.

“I think it’s something that hasn’t been talked about and for women to be able to realize they’re not alone and that there’s so many people that are affected. It’s great,” said Dr. Lindsey Seale, Physician at Parkhill Clinic for Women.

The goal is to create a setting where survivors can ask questions and get the most up-to-date answers from local experts.

“It’s something that really can change women’s lives,” said Dr. Seale.

“One survivor might ask a question or have some comment that another survivor is going through and so then they can connect that way and hopefully have kind of a network of women who have gone through it… It’s great to have a comfortable, safe space for survivors to come together, to talk,” said Marquette.

Saturday’s event was just the second series so far. The next one is still in the works, slated for late August or early September.
