Pink Courage: Meet the Biggest BigWig

Susan G. Komen Ozark’s group of BigWigs had a goal to raise $30,000. They blew that out of the water and raised $86,561. Meet the biggest BigWig in this month’s Pink Courage report.

“I’ve been involved in Komen before I even moved to Arkansas, but it became very personal for me when I was diagnosed with cancer almost six years ago.”

Marybeth Hays raised $26,755 in less than two months for Susan G. Komen Ozark. She knows firsthand the life-saving impact of those funds.

“I’m one of the lucky ones. I had access to the best of medical care here in Northwest Arkansas and, frankly, throughout the U.S… We have invested over $10.5 million in Northwest Arkansas in providing services for women who otherwise would not be able to get that healthcare, the screening, the treatments and also support as a survivor is really, really important.”

Marybeth is passionate about this cause. So much so, she was willing to wear a big pink wig for weeks and was crowned the biggest BigWig of the bunch.

“One thing you learn through the cancer journey is you meet the most amazing people and you’re truly overwhelmed with kindness and generosity of people around you… Susan G. Komen helps convene survivors in a safe and really supportive environment.”

She also shared a great tip. Marybeth said when someone identifies as a breast cancer survivor, a lot of times people do not know what to say. The appropriate response is always, “Wow! Congratulations! How many years?” Breast cancer is not a one and done disease, so she said survivors count and celebrate every year.
