We salute Gabe Cowart!

Cowart was a WWII Navy veteran and served as a Yeoman Second Class from June 1942 to September 1945. He was stationed in the South Pacific during the war.

Cowart was born in Texas but moved to New Mexico during the Great Depression for Roosevelt’s public relief program, The Civilian Conservation Corps. He joined the Navy when the war broke out. After serving, he settled in New Mexico until his death in 1981.

Cowart was nominated by his son, Bob Cowart of Springdale who writes, “The is one of the photos he came back with. This shows the sacrifice the troops have during the holiday’s in time of war. My father is not pictured here but still a great photo in time of war. It is hard to see but it is a sign that says ‘Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.'”
