The fate of the Benton County Dive Team was decided on Thursday night at the Benton County Quorum court meeting.
This comes after dive team members Chris Perry and James Downum were arrested for using dive team equipment for personal business.
In a unanimous decision, the Benton County Quorum Court voted to dissolve the old Benton County Dive Team Board.
This gives control of the dive team to the Benton County Sheriff’s Office
The sheriff’s office said some of the positions could be volunteer-based, but it plans to utilize current deputies as partial dive team members.
The team will consist of the Tri-County Dive Team and the Rogers Fire Department Heavy Rescue Team, if negotiations pan out.
Major Robert Bersi with the Benton County Sheriff’s Office said, “We’ll actually have more oversight of the activities of the dive team and we can make sure they are doing their required duties. And we’ll be able to enhance their abilities by spreading it out to other organizations.”
The sheriff’s office said it has not added any additional people to help with the dive team at this time.
The hope of putting the dive team under the sheriffs office’s umbrella is to be more organized and keep the communities’ safety in mind.
