ROGERS, Ark. (KNWA) — Nearly one-third of all people in the United States will develop cancer during their lifetime. On Tuesday, November 19, you can do your part to help Northwest Arkansas families impacted by the disease.
KNWA and Fox 24 are teaming up with The Cancer Challenge to help fight cancer!
“The Cancer Challenge has been around since 1993,” said organization board member, Cameron Smith. “In that time, we’ve raised more than $3.7 million for cancer care in Northwest Arkansas.”
The Cancer Challenge will be hosting a telethon to collect donations that will provide help to those touched by the deadly disease.
“Cancer is an ugly disease that affects everyone,” said donor and longtime volunteer, Ken Lassiter. “Whether it’s yourself or family member or friend, everybody knows someone that has been affected by cancer.”
A pain that volunteer and donor, Elizabeth Little, knows all too well.
“I started this right after my husband passed away,” said Little, who has volunteered with the telethon for four years. “I saw that it was a good opportunity to support.”
Little said she and her husband did not have to pay a dime for his treatment due to insurance, but this fundraiser helps those who aren’t so lucky.
“It helps them through being able to afford their medication, getting the chemo, helping them with transportation,” Little said.
Gay Prescott, vice president of the Hope Cancer Resources foundation, has worked with the Cancer Challenge for 20 years. She lost her father to the disease in 2007. She encourages people to give what they can.
“There’s not a donation too small,” Prescott said. “Cancer is personal so giving is personal. This goes to families right here in our community.”
The telethon runs November 19 from 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Be sure to donate by calling 479-271-6042 or by texting CANCERNWA to 44321. You can also make in person donations at Cameron Smith & Associates at 3350 S. Pinnacle Hills Parkway, Suite 101.
