Joshua Anderson, 25, of Garfield was arrested at Monday, Aug. 19 in connection with the death of a 23-month-old girl.
Anderson is facing a capital murder charge and is in the Benton County Jail without bond. Capital murder is punishable by death or life in prison without parole. Arkansas law states capital murder charges are to be tried in felony court and are to be reviewed by the state’s Supreme Court.
It is unclear whether Anderson was a patient or employee of the hospital.
Sephylia Fuls was 23-months when she died. She died Sept. 4, 2018, at Northwest Medical Center in Springdale.
She was found unresponsive at Chapel Ridge Apartments not far from the hospital, according to court documents.
According to court documents, Anderson was at the apartment with Sephylia while her mother went to a convenience store to buy beer.
Police said they noticed she had bruising to her left eye and right side of her forehead, a laceration on her chin, and a healing injury also on her chin that appeared to be a burn.
The child’s body was sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab in Little Rock for an autopsy.
The doctor who performed the autopsy said some of Sephylia’s injuries include a large laceration on her liver and on one of her lungs, six fractured ribs, a fractured skull and swelling of the brain. He also found she had two healing fractures to her right arm from a previous incident, court documents state. The doctor determined the manner of death was a homicide.
An intoxicated Anderson allegedly told Sephylia’s mother January 31, that while she was at the store, he kicked, slammed, punched and dropped her. He allegedly told Sephylia’s mother that he didn’t mean to kill her.
Anderson was arrested on suspicion of felony aggravated assault, as well as other charges, during March 2019. A man accused Anderson of chasing him with a machete. An officer noted in court documents that Anderson headbutted him during the arrest.
