Speaking with KNWA, Springdale Mayor, Doug Sprouse confirmed the retirement, also saying that Chief O’Kelley was a “great asset” to the city of Springdale during her tenure.
Chairman of the Springdale Civil Service Commission, Eric Harris has called a meeting for Friday, May 8 at 10:30 A.M. to discuss the hiring process for a new Police Chief.
O’Kelley sent the following letter to Mayor Sprouse:
Last year we discussed that 2015 would be my last year of my Law Enforcement career. I did not express a clear date that I intended to retire, as I felt I had some unfinished business I wanted to complete. This decision has been a heart-head struggle for me, and one that has been difficult to make, as I believe in this department and have been committed to serving this community in a professional and progressive manner.
This letter is to notify you that I plan to retire from the Springdale Police Department effective June 30, 2015. I would like to express my gratitude for the opportunity to work with the Springdale Police Department for the past 9 and half years. It has been the highlight of my police career and one that I will cherish for years to come.
I believe I leave you with well-trained supervisors who can lead this department to the next level, and a command staff that is prepared to make the critical decisions that best serve this community and the department. Among those command staff members, I believe you can find the right person to lead this organization forward as the next Chief of Police.
Springdale is a growing thriving community, and this Police Department has worked hard to earn respect and will always stand ready to serve. I believe this department has made many advancements during my tenure, mostly because of the committed officers and supervisors we employee and not because of me. New leadership means new ideas and renewed energy, and a good leader recognizes when employees are ready to take the reins. I see that now and feel it’s appropriate to turn the page to a new chapter for the Springdale Police Department.
Thank you for your support and that of the City Council, I expect the best is yet to become for this City. I also wish to thank you for the opportunity to serve this fine City and the excellent employees of the Springdale Police Department.
Chief Kathy O’Kelley”
