Trash Problem Piling up at Homeless Camps

KNWA

Without anywhere to legally put it, trash is building up at homeless camps in our area. Often times these camps are hidden in the woods so the city and state don’t know about it unless it’s brought to their attention by locals.

Sadie Garcia drives on Martin Luther King Boulevard in Fayetteville to and from work nearly every day. Garcia said, “I’ve driven by it and progressively seen how bad it’s getting over weeks time and it’s not getting any better.”

During that daily commute, she sees trash piling up at a homeless camp.”And then you have these overfilled bags and then the rodents get in them. I was just speaking to one and they were talking about how the possums and raccoons will just tear them up and drag it everywhere else,” said Garcia.

Garcia said she wants the area to get cleaned up for the safety of those living there and the surrounding community. Garcia said, “I don’t know what the solution is, I just know this being a main hub to the U of A, the trash situation is just getting out of control.”

The city and state own portions of the wooded area where the camp is located and  it’s a problem they are working together to fix.

Arkansas Department of Transportation Spokesperson, Danny Straessle said, “Certain areas, the cities will partner with us in helping to maintain some of those areas, whether it be snow removal or litter pick up.”

Garcia hopes speaking up about the problem will help bring awareness to the issue. She said, “Yea because if they go put it in the dumpster around any of these businesses, that’s illegal!. You know I guess maybe they can use them at the gas station outside trash cans but that’s a lot of trash to be getting rid of.

The state highway department said it’s a work in progress and they could use any community input they can get. You can make a report to both the city, county and the state.
