It was fifty years ago, in 1966, when Beaver Dam was finally finished along the White River. On Thursday, the community celebrated the Dam and Neaver Lake’s 50th anniversary with a party at Dam Site Park.

According to the Army Corps of Engineers the watershed basin for Beaver Lake covers over 1,100 miles or 750,000 acres. The lake is the largest supplier of water for Northwest Arkansas, serving more than 400,000 people.

“It really created an opportunity for water supply, obviously recreation, and it really allowed Northwest Arkansas to flourish and become what it is today.” said Chief Park Ranger Michael Hurley.

Several Arkansas leaders came out for the celebration, including Congressman Steve Womack, Senator John Boozman and even Chief Meteorologist Dan Skoff was there to sing the national anthem.
