British Airways is struggling to fix a problem with its check-in system. It’s causing long lines and delays at several airports. It’s unclear how many flights have been affected. Passengers say the airline told them the system failure had been going on for hours, and was worldwide. However, the airline says it’s checking passengers as normal at Heathrow and Gatwick airports in London.
Congress returns from its seven-week recess today, just after the Labor Day holiday and lawmakers have a long to-do list. Items on the agenda include funding for the government, funding to help combat the Zika virus and the confirmation of a new Supreme Court justice. Presidential politics are expected to hover over all business in the month before lawmakers leave Washington again to go home and campaign.
The President of the Philippines has apologized, after the White House canceled a meeting between him and President Barack Obama. Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte said in a statement that he regrets that his earlier comments about Obama came across as a personal attack. Obama and Duterte were set to meet in Laos this week, where Obama is meeting with Southeast-Asian leaders.
Summer is unofficially over and that means the beginning of flu season. Pediatricians recommend the flu vaccine for children over six months old, but many doctors will not offer the nasal spray vaccine this year, after studies showed it does not protect against many strains of the flu virus. Experts do say it’s not too early to get your child vaccinated. Doctors are encouraged to begin offering the shot no later than October.
Governor Asa Hutchinson has proclaimed September as Arkansas volunteer month. The purpose is to honor organizations and individuals in the state who make a difference by volunteering. To help celebrate, the Department of Human Services is encouraging folks to share a picture of their volunteer work on Twitter using #ARMakeaDifference. The Department is also accepting nominations for the 2016 Arkansas Volunteer Community of the Year awards through September 15th.
Many tire companies are offering rebates throughout the month of September, making it a good time to check your tire needs. Some major tire brands are offering $50 to $100 rebates to customers buying a set of four tires. Proper tread depth gives your vehicle the traction to stop and hold the road on curves. All you need to check tread depth is a penny: make sure the tread goes over Lincoln’s head. If it doesn’t, your tire needs to be replaced.
The city of Fayetteville is still looking for volunteers to help organize the upcoming Square to Square bike ride.
The event happens this Saturday, Sptember 10th. Cyclists will leave the Bentonville square between 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 am and ride the Razorback Greenway to the Fayetteville square where there will be a finish line festival. There will be three designated pit stops along the 30 mile ride with music, bike maintenance services and refreshments.
