ArDoT Prepares to Tackle Icy Roads During Winter Blast

FOX24

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KFTA) — Preparations are already underway for severe winter weather expected over the weekend.

Northwest Arkansas is no stranger to traffic issues when freezing rain or snow appear in the forecast, but the Arkansas Department of Transportation is already ahead of the storm to ease driving conditions.

“It’s important to note that even though we are out pre-treating, there is nothing we can do or that anybody can do to keep precipitation from forming on the state highways,” Danny Straessle, ArDoT spokesman, said. “So, it will form in places that we’ve pre-treated but we will already have a head start in addressing that snow and ice on those highways because we did pre-treat.”

A highly concentrated saltwater brine will be used before precipitation begins, and rock salt will be used to treat the roads during the weather.
