Babysitter Arrested for Raping Child, Mom Speaks Out

Fox 24
A Northwest Arkansas family is rebuilding their lives and trying to repair their broken hearts after their 9-year-old girl was raped by her babysitter.

This mom reached out to us because she wanted to share with you how something like this could happen right in your own community. She says the man she trusted around her kids was very close to the family and that she never thought this could happen.

“My daughter is taking it very hard, she is not okay,” the mom said.

We first told you about Matthew Arnolds’ arrest. Rogers Police say he was babysitting several young girls and over the course of a few days he raped one girl and sexually assaulted two others. When one victim came forward the rest did.

“You could know somebody your entire life,” the girl’s mom said. “It could be somebody in your family, it could be a friend of the family, it could be anyone that you trust with your children.”

This woman who we’ll call “Jane” asked us to keep her identity protected. She says she is going through the hardest time of her life. She learned her nine-year-old daughter was raped by a close family friend.

“I feel like I let her down,” she said. “I feel like I wasn’t there to protect her.”

“Jane” says Arnold has been a regular babysitter since February, but a friend for years.

“This guy was somebody very, very close to our family and we knew nothing about his tendencies of this we knew nothing about it and if we had he never would have been around our children.”

Now it’s a day by day process for a broken family to rebuild.

“Trying to move forward, but we cant do this until this is done and until he is locked up behind bars to where he cant do this to another family or to anybody,” she said.

We should note, each victim told police the abuse only happened once. Matthew Arnold is in the Benton County Jail facing felony rape and felony sexual assault charges.
