Bella Vista Approves Narcan for Police

BELLA VISTA, Ark. (KFTA) — To help fight the opioid crisis, Bella Vista police officers will now carry Narcan.

The measure was approved during Monday’s city council meeting.

The department already has 40 doses of the nasal spray, which is used to counteract the effects of opioid abuse.

Bella Vista police chief says he’s glad officers have the Narcan, but the kits are an emergency option and don’t replace professional medical care.

“Many times we are the first ones there,” said Bella Vista Police Chief James Graves. “In a town like Bella Vista, you know, fire personnel can get there very quickly.  But again, people can become overdose exposed and overdose very very quickly.”

The kits were provided through a state grant and won’t cost the city or department anything.

One officer is already completely trained to use Narcan.

The rest of the officers will be trained in the next three weeks.
