Avoca has a population of only about 500 people, but a local liquor store wants an extra day of sales to keep up with competition not within the county, but across state lines.
Stacey Latham and her sister, Stephanie own “Two Sisterz Liquor” in Avoca. They took the idea of the extra day of sales to Avoca city council members and then took up a petition of signatures to the Quorum Court.
The two want Avoca residents to vote on the idea of Sunday liquor sales because they say many people are going across the state line to fill up when they’re closed.
“We had quite a few of our customers coming to us and letting us know that they’re actually going up to Missouri for Sunday sales and we realized why is Avoca missing out on this great revenue? We may as well try it,” said Stacey Latham, Co-owner of Two Sisterz Liquor.
The special election will be held on July 11th.
Also on the special election ballot will be to decide if voters want to pay up to support the Beaver Lake Volunteer fire department. Because of growing demands for service and declining availability, the Beaver Lake volunteer fire department is asking the Quorum Court to allow the county clerk to move forward with the July election.
This election will ask people to approve a $75 increase in annual dues. Right now, people who live in the area pay $75 for dues. The department tells us the resources are no longer meeting the needs of the community.
