BELLA VISTA, Ark. (KFTA) — Northwest Arkansas drivers are reminded to buckle up as Thanksgiving approaches.
The “Click It or Ticket!” campaign begins on Nov. 19, and Northwest Arkansas law enforcement agencies will be participating.
“This year, our officers will be out in full force to ensure drivers and passengers are buckled up as they travel to their Thanksgiving destinations. Those disobeying the law will be pulled over and ticketed,” said Bella Vista Police Chief James Graves.
Cassi Lapp with the City of Bella Vista issued a news release about this national campaign to save lives.
“Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel times of the year. With millions of Americans on the road traveling to visit friends and family for the Thanksgiving holiday, it is more essential than ever to ensure all vehicle passengers are buckled up,” Lapp said in the news release.
The Tontitown Police Department is also participating in the initiative.
Tontitown Police Capt. Wes Hart said it’s all about preventing the worst from happening, especially on a heavily traveled roadway like Hwy. 412.
There have been 400 accidents in Tontitown since 2014 with 12 of them fatal.
Lapp said that wearing a seat belt is the single most effective way to help prevent injury or death in a vehicle crash.
More than half of the people who died in a fatal traffic crash during Thanksgiving 2016 were not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to Arkansas State Police.
