City of Fort Smith offering free flood waste disposal

The City of Fort Smith helping flood victims in its own way– including offering free waste disposal for affected homes.

On Thursday (June 6) the sanitation department started going around flood-affected neighborhoods to pick up debris.

Director of the department, Kyle Foreman said residents are asked to separate waste into three piles:
one with damaged house items like drywall and insulation, one with dirty or clean sandbags, and one with electronics and metals.

For anyone who brings waste to the landfill site, disposal fees will be waived until Saturday, June 29th.
Foreman wants everyone to know that even if you don’t see the workers picking up the waste, just know it’s happening. He asks for people to be patient during the cleanup process.

“The problem we’re running into right this second is traffic in some of these affected areas,” Foreman said. “Between volunteers graciously donating their time and contractors actually doing work, it’s hard for us to get down the street.”

Foreman said those who bring waste will need to have proof of address in order to get disposal fees waived.
